Between movement and perception
Born in Paris, Grégoire Malandain began his artistic journey at the age of 17 when he joined the Académie International De La Danse in Paris, France to pursue a 3 year long apprenticeship programme. During this time, he was offered multiple opportunities to take the stage with some highly esteemed dance companies in the capacity of an apprentice. Upon its successful completion, he then began studying Contemporary dance at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Danse de Lyon, France with the aim of pursuing a professional dance career. Just before the end of his third year, he was chosen to be a part of the world renowned Ultima Vez/Wim Vandekeybus Company in Brussels for the show 'In Spite of Wishing and Wanting' which toured around the world for two and a half years. During this time, Grégoire also performed extensively on television and locally held fashion shows. In 2018 he Joined The Jean Paul Gaultier Fashion Freak Show as a soloist where he performed more than 200 times in Folies Bergère theatre in Paris.Currently, he works as a freelance artist in Paris, France who teaches workshops and guest faculty classes both locally and overseas. He is currently focusing on developing his own pedagogic practice that is inspired from his own experiences as a student and as a professional.
It is in parallel with his career as a dancer that Grégoire is self-taught in video and photography. He began by filming dance workshops and developed his eye for dance movement. He discovered his interest in landscape photography as well as portrait photography during his many tours around the world. On the strength of these different experiences in various fields, Grégoire questions the intrinsic link between the feeling of the present moment and the spectator's perception.
